Let the groundbreaking Canopus EDIUS NX Express take you to the
world of high definition video production. Use any mix of HD and SD
video content; work with unlimited video, audio, title and graphics
layers and any combination of realtime effects; and, most
importantly, preview your work in progress in high-quality, full
resolution — in realtime — on the type of video monitor on which it
is intended to be displayed — even HDTV.
Many of the HDV editing systems currently available compromise video
quality in order to provide realtime editing functionality. Canopus
EDIUS NX Express delivers genuine realtime HD resolution
editing including full quality, full frame rate HD output — to an HD
video monitor — from the timeline. Two important workflow benefits
are derived from a genuine realtime HDV editing system like Canopus
EDIUS NX Express:
- No rendering is required to preview edited sequences;
results are displayed instantaneously — on HD video monitors.
- The original video and audio data can be preserved at every step of the editing process. You can always be assured that the format you start with is exactly what will be delivered. This eliminates any guesswork when applying the multitude of realtime effects featured with the system.

The move to high definition video production impacts computing power requirements and realtime editing performance, proportionally. Although HDV and HD video can be edited on today's systems with a basic OHCI FireWire interface, the realtime editing performance is strictly limited, and lacks any true full resolution video output for preview.
The Canopus EDIUS NX Express system features advanced hardware, built upon high-speed, high-bandwidth PCI Express technology that provides editors with video acquisition and output capabilities including full-quality, full resolution component HD/SD video output as well as hardware-based line scaling and video overlay, for ultimate realtime HD/SD editing and effects composition performance.
Canopus EDIUS NX Express inputs and outputs provide connectivity to a broad range of analog and digital video equipment, including HDV, DVCPRO HD*, DVCPRO 50*, DV and S-VHS decks, as well as broadcast HD/SD monitors. Connections include 4-pin and 6-pin FireWire, S-Video, composite, unbalanced stereo audio I/O and component HD/SD video output.

The ability to view compositions accurately, while editing high
definition video, is critical. Only an HD monitor can faithfully
display HD resolution output modes such as 1080i and 720p. Canopus
EDIUS NX Express features component HD video output for full-quality, full-resolution, realtime monitor output of 720p, 1080p and 1080i HD video.
Canopus EDIUS NX Express includes capture support for HDV cameras
and decks including Sony's HDR-FX1 camera. Canopus EDIUS NX Express provides direct capture support from HDV devices such as Sony's HDR-FX1, either using the native HDV MPEG-2 transport stream format or the Canopus HQ codec.
Canopus EDIUS NX Express also includes an export-to-tape utility for edited sequences, and supports full device control options for Sony, Canon and JVC HDV devices.
Unlike OHCI-based editing systems, Canopus EDIUS NX Express processes video overlay using hardware. Video overlay data is written to the graphics card using Direct Memory Access (DMA). This means a lesser load is placed on the CPU during editing and realtime playback, and results in better realtime performance using the same CPU.
When using Canopus EDIUS NX Express with the Expansion Kit, hardware-based line scaling is used to convert the native resolution of HD video, such as 1440x1080 or 1280x720, to 1920x1080, for full-resolution HD component output. With other editing systems, line scaling is handled by the CPU, which adds additional load and ultimately restricts realtime editing performance.
Canopus EDIUS NX Express remains a proven leader of realtime, hardware-assisted DV editing with its onboard hardware DV codec, which provides high-quality video streams on demand, with unmatched flexibility. Software-based DV rendering with generic OHCI hardware utilizes valuable CPU power, thus limiting the realtime
effects and multi-track capabilities available to the editor.
Canopus EDIUS NX Express relieves the CPU from handling the processor-intensive task of rendering a DV output stream.
Perhaps more importantly, the innovative Canopus EDIUS NX Express hardware and device control driver design allows frame-accurate capture and output to DV devices, not achievable using generic OHCI.
Canopus EDIUS NX Express circuitry stabilizes the DV signal for
smooth control while the device control driver is designed and
customized to control many different types of DV device.
Frame-accurate control means Canopus EDIUS NX Express can output video back to an exact location on DV tape, for perfect insert recording.
When working with DV, Canopus EDIUS NX Express hardware handles the
digital video data and PCM audio data for each video frame as one
data block. The consistent data block handling at every stage of
Canopus EDIUS NX Express processing (including the ring buffer on the main memory, the data buffer on the board memory, and the codec module on the board) ensures video and audio stay in sync throughout the capturing, editing and output process.
Canopus EDIUS NX Express analog inputs can capture video to the high-quality Canopus codecs including Canopus Lossless and Canopus HQ, as well as DV, SD uncompressed, MPEG-2 and DVCPRO 50*.
Canopus EDIUS NX Express analog outputs always provide high-quality
uncompressed YUV 4:2:2 video while editing or designing in EDIUS
Pro, Adobe® Premiere® Pro, Adobe After Effects® and Adobe
Photoshop®.
The PCI Express bus design not only provides Canopus EDIUS NX Express with a hardware platform perfect for video editing, but it also offers you a means for super-fast SD MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 encoding directly from your EDIUS timeline. Even with today's high-speed PCs, the time you spend waiting for your video projects to encode to MPEG format for DVDs or portable media devices can still stretch out to unbearable lengths. Instead of relying solely on the PC's
CPU (as do software-only video editing, DVD authoring and format
conversion products), the onboard MPEG encoding hardware featured
with Canopus EDIUS NX Express handles the tough encoding tasks, fast.
Canopus EDIUS NX Express hardware can perform bidirectional conversion
between analog and DV, from within any Windows-based NLE that
supports OHCI. This means that applications such as Avid® Xpress®
DV, Vegas® and Adobe® Premiere® Pro can capture and output DV using
the Canopus EDIUS NX Express analog video I/O. Canopus EDIUS NX
Express features the
same technology found in the highly-acclaimed series of ADVC
products from Canopus, offering the very best in picture quality
preservation and A/V synchronization.
Canopus EDIUS NX Express features onboard analog filtering technology to improve the quality of analog footage during capture. Digital 2D Y/C separation separates Brightness (Y) and Chrominance (C) from the composite video source signal by one frame. Digital 3D Y/C separation separates by cross-referencing each frame with the frames immediately in front and behind, further refining and improving the overall image quality. Digital 3D Noise Reduction eliminates noise from the analog video signal by detecting noise based on the characteristics of the video being input. Other filtering options include 2D Y and 2D C Noise Reduction, Black/White Gain Adjust and both Horizontal and Vertical Outline Enhancement.
The 2D Y and C noise reduction filters reduce noise based on either the Y input signal or C input signal. Black Gain Adjust raises the gain level within the black range of the Y input signal, making black colors clearer, with more contrast. The White Gain filter lowers the gain level in the white range of the Y input signal, darkening white colors, with more contrast.
The Horizontal Outline Enhancement filter adds an edge to the Y input signal, to emphasize horizontal edges, while the Vertical Outline filter detects vertical edges from the Y input signal and emphasizes them.
Canopus EDIUS NX Express hardware can also be used from within several popular applications. These plug-ins allow you to preview your compositions directly on a video monitor in full, uncompressed 4:2:2 YUV quality, a feature that is especially important when applying color treatments.
